The Need Of The Hour…

“#BigBreaking: Coronavirus Cases Crossed 1M Mark In A Single Day”

“#Inspiring: This College Graduate Developed An App To Detect Weather Warnings In Simple Step”

“#Blessed: My New WFH Set Up. Thank you love for this lovely #QuarantineGift. Love you. xoxo”

From global disaster to self-obsessed “#Influencers” to heartbreaking demise news of your favourite actors… The news feed of our social media is getting crammed in every possible way. As the lockdown situation continue to hover over our head, all around the world, the amount of involvement in social networks has also increased significantly.

The death of a popular Bollywood actor recently has triggered the question on our awareness of mental health. But to what extent? Few days of Insta and WhatsApp stories with “#IWillBeThereForYou”. That’s it?

As per a research paper published on Industrial Psychiatry Journal, about 14% of the global burden of disease is attributed to neuropsychiatric disorders. The burden of mental disorders is likely to have been underestimated because of inadequate appreciation of the inter-play between mental illness and other health disorders.

And don’t even talk about India. The hypocrisy, the mediocrity, the shame, the stigma… How are we ever gonna understand that Mental Health is not something that can be ignored?

One study found mental health literacy among adolescents in India to be very low, i.e. depression was identified by 29.04% and schizophrenia/psychosis was recognized only by 1.31%. Stigma was noted to be present in help-seeking. Ind Psychiatry J. 2016 Jul-Dec; 25(2): 131–134

The suicide rate in India in 2015 at 15.7/100,000 is higher than the regional average of 12.9 and the global average of 10.6. Suicide is the leading cause of death among those aged 15–29 in India.”

That was in 2015, a whole different world from what we’re living in now. And guess what! Now the “woke” media has chose to highlight the death of every single person from Suicide. Isn’t that just pathetic!!! I, myself, have been working as a media person. I’ve experienced the old era of the news world and also living the current situation, bit by bit. There are scarcity of content. There are lesser things happening around. But that doesn’t mean to highlight the worst of everything just to get your TRP/visitors number up. Have we lost the morality of Journalism? Have we lost the humanity in ourselves?

Stating all that, I’d like to request you just one thing. Don’t rush. The world might seem to caught a different pace. Life, all around, must have shown you some unthinkable things. But you don’t have to follow what trend. You don’t have to be chaotic to achieve what you truly need. Take a break from the eternal race.

Life will go on as it always has been. The world will move on as it always has been. But the scars of struggle will be left on the memory lane for ages to come. Let’s not make it brutal. Live for what you have. Thrive for what you will become. Just don’t hurt yourself or anyone else on this journey of lifetime. Remember, the memories will stay with you, for now and eternity.

Take a breath.

Do the next right thing.

Love. 💙
